Healthcare Leadership Council Praises Congressional Interest in Removing Barriers to Value-Based Care Innovation

Legislation Necessary to Expand Breadth of Healthcare Entities That Can Engage in Value-Based Partnerships

WASHINGTON – Following the Administration finalizing regulatory modernization of outdated fraud and abuse rules to enable advances in value-based care, the president of the Healthcare Leadership Council (HLC) praised members of Congress who are poised to take a leadership role in guiding legislative efforts that will further remove barriers to healthcare progress.

HLC president Mary R. Grealy cited the bipartisan leadership of Senators Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Mark Warner (D-VA), and Representatives Ami Bera (D-CA), Tony Cardenas (D-CA), Mike Kelly (R-PA), Ron Kind (D-WI), Roger Marshall (R-KS), Markwayne Mullin (R-OK), and Brad Wenstrup (R-OH) who have expressed their commitment to enact legislation that will remove obstacles standing in the way of multi-sector collaborations that will improve health outcomes and strengthen cost efficiency.

She said, “The Administration took an important step in modernizing the Stark law and Anti-Kickback statute to allow the kind of creative patient-centered collaborations that will significantly elevate the value gained from every healthcare dollar spent, but more work needs to be done. The regulatory work still leaves barriers standing in the way of important healthcare sectors, such as drug and device manufacturers and clinical laboratories, who are ready to work with physicians, hospitals, health plans and others in innovative partnerships to improve value and protect and strengthen patient health. If we don’t open the door to these collaborations, it’s a disservice to patients. Congress can and should act to remove those barriers.”

Ms. Grealy added, “The healthcare system has tremendous unlocked potential to improve health and extend lifespans through care coordination involving every sector of healthcare. We look forward to working with the bipartisan leaders in Congress to take American healthcare to the next level.”
