Healthcare Leadership Council Names US Chamber Veteran and Seasoned Healthcare Expert Katie Mahoney to Top Policy Post
HLC Board Chair: Hiring reflects strong and growing momentum at HLC
Washington, DC, February 26, 2024 – The Healthcare Leadership Council (HLC), the leading health industry association representing all disciplines of American healthcare, today named Katie Mahoney, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s top health care policy expert, the organization’s new Executive Vice President and Chief Policy Officer. Katie’s arrival follows the hiring of Maria Ghazal, veteran healthcare expert and Business Roundtable senior executive for nearly two decades, as HLC’s new President and CEO, and Calvin W. Schmidt, Senior Vice President at Johnson & Johnson, as Board Chair.
“I’m thrilled to welcome Katie to our team and know she has exactly the right experience to work effectively with providers, payers, and businesses to tackle emerging and complex healthcare issues, and advance our member’s policy priorities,” said Maria Ghazal, President and CEO of HLC. “Katie will be an indispensable partner and strong leader as we elevate the private sector’s critical role in delivering affordable, accessible, high-quality care to Americans and continue to advance patient privacy and security through the HLC’s Confidentiality Coalition.”
Mahoney joins HLC after serving as vice president, health policy, at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. At the Chamber, Mahoney was responsible for developing, advocating, and publicizing the Chamber’s health policy agenda, as well as working with members of Congress, the administration, and regulatory agencies to achieve it.
“With Katie Mahoney’s hiring, HLC is assembling an exceptional leadership team,” said Calvin Schmidt, HLC’s Board Chair and Senior Vice President at Johnson & Johnson. “Few organizations inside the Beltway can match the combined experience of Katie’s nearly 14 years of health policy leadership at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and HLC President and CEO Maria Ghazal’s two decades at the Business Roundtable. Attracting leaders like Maria and Katie from Washington’s top business organizations reflects strong and growing momentum at HLC.”
Prior to assuming her post at the Chamber in 2010, Mahoney served as assistant director of health and FDA business at the law firm of Greenberg Traurig. In addition to her 20 years of extensive health policy work in DC, Mahoney has operational and business office experience at an integrated health system and a national health plan.
“I’m honored to join the team at HLC, the only healthcare industry organization that unites executives from every sector,” said Mahoney. “America’s healthcare system sets the global standard for high-quality care. I look forward to working alongside the industry’s foremost leaders as we strive to make it even better.”
A Massachusetts native, Mahoney holds an undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University. She earned a law degree and a master’s degree in health administration from Tulane University’s Schools of Law and Public Health and Tropical Medicine, respectively.
