Healthcare Leadership Council President Mary R. Grealy Announces Retirement
Twenty-four Year Tenure Leading Multi-Sector Organization Saw Advances in Medicare Reform, Value-Based Care, Health Coverage Access, Data Interoperability
WASHINGTON – Mary R. Grealy, president of the Healthcare Leadership Council (HLC) for over two decades, has announced her retirement, effective at the end of this year.
Ms. Grealy began her tenure as head of HLC, a multi-sectoral alliance of top industry executives, in 1999. Prior to that, she had served as Chief Washington Counsel for the American Hospital Association and as Chief Operating Officer and Executive Counsel for the Federation of American Hospitals.
Under her leadership at HLC, the organization has played a significant role in shaping major developments in American healthcare, including the creation and implementation of the Medicare Part D prescription drug benefit, the transition to value-based care, improvements in patient privacy laws, expanded access to health coverage, addressing the opioid crisis, advances in health data access and interoperability and, most recently, improvements in the nation’s disaster readiness and response infrastructure.
“It has been the privilege of a lifetime to work with visionary leaders from across the healthcare spectrum and to bring HLC’s unique multi-sectoral voice to the health policy challenges that affect lives, health and futures,” said Ms. Grealy. “All anyone can ask in their professional career is to have the opportunity to make a difference and being in the leadership of this organization has given me that in extraordinary measure.”
Dr. Susan Turney, President and CEO of the Marshfield Clinic Health System and HLC Chair, said, “Leading the Healthcare Leadership Council is one of the most challenging positions in healthcare advocacy because it means bringing together the diverse interests of payers, providers, manufacturers and other sectors to collaborate toward a better healthcare system for all Americans. Mary Grealy’s legacy is seen in her success in harnessing the collective energies of these industry leaders to drive meaningful, transformative change. We regret that she is retiring, but we are extremely grateful for her service.”
Dr. Turney said HLC has launched a search to identify candidates to succeed Ms. Grealy.
