“Safeguard the Health of Millions of Americans” – Given Prevalence of Fentanyl, Evolving Opioid Crisis, HLC Urges SUPPORT Act Reauthorization
Ahead of the Committee on Energy and Commerce’s markup of the “SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Reauthorization Act of 2025,” the Healthcare Leadership Council (HLC), an association of CEOs and C-suite executives from all sectors of healthcare, sent a letter to leaders on the House Energy and Commerce Committee urging its prioritization and passage.
Originally passed in October 2018 with bipartisan support, the SUPPORT Act has made considerable stride in combatting the opioid epidemic. Energy and Commerce Chairman Brett Guthrie (R-KY) and Rep. Brittany Pettersen (D-CO) are leading the reauthorization of H.R. 2483.
“Since its enactment, this landmark legislation has led to significant progress, including expanding access and resources for the people impacted by opioid addiction. It also importantly strengthens healthcare providers’ ability to help patients with substance use disorders.” said HLC President and CEO Maria Ghazal.
“Despite this progress, the opioid crisis continues to evolve, with rising concerns over the increasing prevalence of synthetic opioids such as fentanyl. HLC strongly urges the Committee to prioritize the reauthorization of the SUPPORT Act to maintain the momentum in the fight against the opioid crisis and safeguard the health and well-being of millions of Americans. We remain committed to collaborating with you to advance policies that address substance use disorders and improve care for those in need.”
