Statement by Healthcare Leadership Council President Mary R. Grealy on the Supreme Court’s Affordable Care Act Decision

The U.S. Supreme Court’s 7-2 decision to dismiss the most recent legal challenge to the Affordable Care Act is good news for Americans who want stability and accessibility in our nation’s healthcare system. The Court’s decision preserves critical features in the law, including coverage for people with pre-existing conditions and the ability for young adults to stay on their parents’ health plan while they seek employment with health benefits.

We can hope that this will bring an end to the political warfare over the ACA that has gone on for over a decade. It is the law of the land and, rather than pursue extremist positions like repealing the law or significantly expanding the federal government’s role in health coverage, policymakers should focus on continued improvements to the ACA including premium subsidies and cost-sharing protections for low-income consumers and steps to further increase competition in the state marketplaces.
