Statement by HLC President Mary R. Grealy on the FDA’s Emergency Use Authorization Decision for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine

The FDA’s decision to grant an Emergency Use Authorization for the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech is a tremendous achievement for healthcare innovation and a beginning of the effort to put the pandemic behind us.  After months of sickness and tragedy, we can envision a brighter, healthier future and a return to normalcy.

There are two critical steps before us.  One, it is essential that the American people adhere to the guidance of federal and state health authorities and take common-sense steps to prevent further spread of the virus.  Also, it is vital that we take the vaccine when it becomes available. The Pfizer vaccine and those that will follow are undergoing rigorous testing and review to ensure that they are safe and effective.  The Healthcare Leadership Council intends to collaborate with the federal government and other organizations to communicate the importance of getting vaccinated.
